This basket is an older used basket in relatively good condition. I found it in a little junk shop in the Landrum area of South Carolina, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The shape of the basket appealed to me instantly and so did the patina.
I call it an apple basket but it could have been used for more general purposes; my husband sees it as an egg basket. You get to choose what you want to use it for.
The condition is not perfect but it is very good; I will give you an idea of what the problems are but remember to zoom in on the photos to see magnified details if you want:
- I can find only one place on the body of the basket where the "cane" is broken. It is minor - see photos.
- a little dust and dirt on the bottom inside of the basket
- the thinner "woven" wood strips that wrap around the structural core part of the handle have "cracked" in some of the really tight bends, likely due to dryness of the wood.
- Similar to the above can be said for the strips wrapped around the top edge of the basket - almost intact but not quite
My expertise is not baskets but I believe it is made of split wood, it could be split oak but I am not sure of the type of wood it is. When I look closely I see what appears to be a cream or beige color paint residue on the splint strips that run horizontally, the weaver. The paint residue is on the exterior of the basket only.
If it is a basket made in the greater region of The Blue Ridge Mountains the wood could be split white oak, which grows locally.
The handle remains strong even if the thinner weaver material that is wrapped around the core is a little brittle. The core appears to be strong and solid, not cracked or broken.
13" in top diameter, 9" in height to the top of the rim, 13" in height to the top of the handle.
If you have any information that can shed light on the origin of this basket I would love to hear from you.
We will wrap and box very carefully with plenty of room all around it in the baske to ensure safe shipment.
