A beautiful little basket gem handmade in Charleston South Carolina in the Gullah Tradition. Many of the basket makers in Charleston have learned the skill, the craft, the art from their sisters, mothers, aunts and grandmothers. The method of making these baskets goes back to areas of Africa. The slaves that were traded brought these basket making traditions with them and to this day the basket makers continue to delight us with their beautiful works of art. Fortunately, the dark days of slavery are behind us.

This basket is made of Sweet Grass that grows in Charleston, Pine Straw and Palm Leaf. It is made in a conical shape to hang on a wall or a wood post. The basket does not hold water but it will hold dried flowers or garlic, ginger and other things used in the kitchen. It would also be a good home for an air plant or orchid - perhaps with a plastic or glass lining inside.

This basket has some age which can be told by the darkened color of the grasses and straws. We believe it to be 10-30 years old. It is in relatively good condition but there is a place at the very bottom where the palm leaf "wrap" is lost (see photos). Also, inside of the basket it has a little dirt/dust - it might have had one of those "sponges" used for flower arrangements in the bottom of it in the past. I have not attempted to clean it - but I do think it can be completely cleaned if a patient person made an attempt to do it. Personally I would leave it alone.

I measures 9-1/2" from top of the loop to the bottom curve (where the wrap is lost). It is approximately 6-1/4" wide.

We will wrap and box very carefully to ensure safe shipment.
