Old Vintage Cherokee Basket Circular Handles Planter Jardiniere Vase Qualla CO-OP Martha Reed

Ask a question

Handmade, hand woven, hand crafted Authentic Cherokee Basket with Qualla CO-OP label attached and an old faded/yellowed tag that says "made by Martha Reed, Walnut Root, Buttery Nut, Blood Root".

See photos of the tags attached. The names of nuts and roots refer to the origin of the dyes used for creating different colors of wood to use for the basket. The woods were hand split and hand dyed before the basket maker started weaving the basket. The wood that was used for weaving may be a mixture of woods - I don't know enough about it to tell you.

The exact vintage of the basket is not known to us. Perhaps you can determine the age by the design of the label from the Qualla CO-OP? I can tell you that it has been around for a "good many years". There is dust settled in it and the basket appears to generally be yellowed and dry from age.

Fortunately this basket is in excellent condition. There is no damage or repairs that I have been able to find.

9" tall x 7-3/4" top diameter. The basket is not small but also not excessively large. The craftsmanship is very good - the basket is skillfully made and it is symmetrical in shape, not off balance or crude. Even "stitches".

I have seen only one other basket online in this shape - it was a vintage basket and it was described as a flower pot. I hope that this information is correct because I am now spreading information. The basket that we offer for sale here does not appear to have been used for any purpose other than display. The wood is not stained or discolored, it is not water damaged. It is dusty.

We will wrap and box very carefully to ensure safe shipment.
